Soft Belt - Mechanical Restraint
This course is designed to be adaptable to a range of different teams, settings and tasks.
This piece of equipment, designed by Doug Melia from Safer Handling can be used to reduce harm to self or others in situations where the only other options are prolonged manual restraint or some form of sedation.
The belt has been operationally deployed in a number of settings in order to improve the lifestyle of the service user. Using force, or applying restrictive practices should be done so as a last resort and with the bests interests of the individual at heart.

"UUUUU was unable to go out in transport as he kept removing his seat belt and punching himself in the face on the way to different activities, however without excursions UUUUU did not have many other hobbies. The belt was introduced after everything else had failed and UUUUs family supported and welcomed its introduction. Now UUUU no longer harms himself and his activities and excursions have resumed, we have now transitioned him back out of not needing the belt. But it's good to know it's there"
